Advertising ban

The municipality earns money from advertising in public spaces. Advertising is already everywhere around us and is aimed at influencing our behaviour. The vast majority of advertising is focused on consumption and therefore also has negative consequences for people and nature. That is why Eindhoven is distancing itself from commercial advertising as much as possible.

In 2024, we submitted an initiative proposal to ban advertising for animal proteins and fossil fuel products (such as air travel and cruises). This proposal did not gain a majority, so we tried again in 2025 with a revised proposal. At present, the coalition (GL, PvdA, CDA, D66) has indicated that it is not prepared to potentially lose revenue.

Our commitment:
Eindhoven will stop advertising in public spaces, with the exception of government campaigns, culture and charities. Until advertising in public spaces is completely banned, advertisements for animal products, fossil fuels, gambling and alcohol will disappear. An advertising tax will also be introduced. Illuminated advertising columns and bus shelters that emit odours will be banned.
